Mint launched in 2006 and became the most popular free budgeting app in the US. Connect your banks, see all transactions in one place, get a credit score, set budgets. It worked. Intuit bought it in 2009 for $170 million and kept it running for 15 years.

Then in January 2024, Intuit announced Mint would shut down. By March 23, 2024, the app was gone. Users were told to move to Credit Karma, another Intuit product. The migration was rough. Many features didn't carry over. Budgeting tools vanished. Transaction editing became limited. Years of categorized spending history got messy in the transfer.

For a lot of people, that was the moment to rethink the whole approach. If a company can just shut down your financial tool and scatter your data, maybe giving them all your bank credentials wasn't the best plan.

Credit Karma: क्या Survived

Credit Karma absorbed some of Mint's DNA but it's a different product. The credit score monitoring is still there, and it's still free. Bank account linking works through Plaid. You can see transactions from connected accounts.

But here's what didn't survive: the budget planning tools, custom categories with the depth Mint had, the bill tracking alerts, and the clean spending-over-time views. Credit Karma's real business is recommending credit cards and loans. The expense tracking is secondary, and it shows.

If you loved Mint specifically for its budgeting features, Credit Karma isn't really a replacement. It's a credit monitoring app with some transaction visibility bolted on.

पैसा Vault: एक Different Philosophy

Money Vault doesn't try to be Mint. It doesn't connect to your bank. It doesn't show your credit score. It takes a fundamentally different approach: instead of pulling data from banks automatically, it gives you fast ways to get data in yourself.

Voice input is the main thing. Say "coffee 4.50 Starbucks" and the app parses the amount, picks the category, and logs it. रसीद स्कैनिंग grabs totals and line items from paper receipts using on-device OCR. CSV import handles bank statements in bulk when you want that. And the AI chat lets you ask questions like "how much did I spend on food last month?"

The trade-off is obvious. Mint was hands-off. Money Vault asks you to participate. But that participation takes about 3 seconds per expense when you're using voice, and you never share a single bank credential with anyone.

कैसे खर्च लॉग करते हैं

Mint's model was automatic bank sync. Connect accounts through Plaid, wait for transactions to appear, maybe recategorize a few. Manual entry existed but nobody really used it. The whole point was not having to do anything.

Money Vault gives you four paths in. Voice is the fastest for daily stuff. Just talk to your phone. "Groceries 67 Trader Joe's." Done. रसीद स्कैनिंग handles those paper receipts that pile up in your wallet. Manual entry works when you want to be precise about details. And CSV import lets you dump a whole month of bank transactions in one go.

Cash transactions are where this matters most. Mint couldn't track cash at all unless you manually entered it, which almost nobody did. With Money Vault, you just say "coffee 3 bucks" right after you pay. Cash, card, Venmo, whatever. It all goes in the same way.

निजता

This is the part where Mint's shutdown actually taught people something. When Intuit decided to close Mint, users realized their financial data lived on someone else's servers, accessed through someone else's API, and they had zero control over what happened next.

Money Vault processes everything on your device. Voice recognition runs through Apple's Speech framework locally. Receipt OCR uses Apple Vision on-device. Your transactions, categories, and spending history never leave your phone. No account required. No Plaid. No third-party data broker seeing every purchase you make.

Mint stored everything in the cloud. Required Plaid for bank connections. Shared data with advertisers (that's how it stayed free). When the service shut down, users scrambled to export data before the deadline. Some lost years of history.

नोट

A 2025 Bankrate survey found that 37% of Americans aren't comfortable linking bank accounts to third-party apps. After Mint's shutdown, that number likely went up. On-device tracking with CSV import gives you the data without the exposure.

बहु-मुद्रा

Money Vault supports 50+ currencies with real-time exchange rates. Voice input recognizes currency mentions automatically. Say "lunch 15 euros" and it logs in EUR. Scan a receipt from Tokyo and it picks up JPY. If you travel or work with international clients, everything just works.

Mint was built for Americans using US dollars. It technically displayed foreign transactions, but only after your bank converted them to USD. No multi-currency wallets. No exchange rate tracking. If you earned in one currency and spent in another, Mint was basically useless for the foreign side.

कीमत

Mint was free but ad-supported. That sounds great until you realize the product was you. Intuit monetized by recommending credit cards and financial products based on your spending data. You weren't paying with money. You were paying with your complete transaction history.

Money Vault has a free tier that includes voice input, manual tracking, multi-currency support, and basic statistics. Premium unlocks AI chat, advanced analytics, and receipt scanning. You pay with money, not data. And the free tier is genuinely useful on its own, not a teaser that nags you to upgrade every screen.

The real cost comparison isn't about dollars. It's about what you're giving up. With Mint, you gave up privacy and control. With Money Vault, you give up automatic bank sync but keep everything else.

अंतिम निष्कर्ष

If you loved Mint for automatic bank sync and don't mind the privacy trade-off, Credit Karma inherited some of that DNA. But it's a different app with different priorities, and the budgeting tools are thin.

If Mint's shutdown made you rethink things, Money Vault is a clean break. Your data stays on your device. You don't need to trust a third party with bank credentials. Voice input makes logging fast enough that you won't miss automatic sync as much as you'd think. रसीद स्कैनिंग catches the paper trail. And 50+ currencies mean it works wherever you are, not just in the US.

Mint proved that free can disappear overnight. Money Vault proves that privacy-first tracking doesn't have to be slow or painful. Different era, different approach.
